Why wet area bathrooms add more comfort, style and value to your home than conventional bathrooms

Cleaner, more beautiful lines. More accessible. Safer. These are just some of the advantages of ‘wet area’ bathrooms like this one. But a big disadvantage is the cost, right? Not necessarily, says Fix It Nelson owner Peter Billings.

Peter has been engaged by a large retirement village to convert the bathrooms from conventional to wet area.

“By getting rid of shower boxes, you make bathrooms safer and more accessible because there’s no doorway and nothing to step up onto,” he says. “Because we’re so experienced in installing wet area showers, we’re able to keep the cost down.”

Peter says wet area bathrooms offer advantages for home owners as well as retirement villages.

“You don’t have to be elderly or disabled to benefit from a wet area bathroom,” he explains. “‘Aging in place’, meaning the ability to continue living in your home throughout the different stages of your life, has become an important trend in housing. Wet area bathrooms in your home enable you to remain in your home throughout your lifetime if you want to. You can have elderly or disabled family or friends come to stay without any hassles. And if you decide to sell, wet area bathrooms can be a real selling point and add to the sale price.”

WABs open up far more design possibilities, too.

“The traditional shower is a box that blocks the natural flow of a bathroom,” says Peter. “In contrast, wet area showers are open, inviting and go with the flow, giving you a whole lot more options when it comes to designing your new bathroom. The possibilities are endless.”

He cautions against using inexperienced building contractors or trying to DIY.

“Poor wet area design or installation can compromise safety, health and comfort,” he says, “and leaks and other issues can cause significant structural damage. It pays to talk to qualified tradespeople who know what they’re doing.
