Keeping warm - Prepare now while autumn is still here!

Follow our great pre-winter check list below to see you through the colder months.

Autumn is the time to tidy up in preparation of hunkering down when the big chill arrives.

1. Windows – Check to see if all windows are operational and that they are draft free.

2. Paint – make sure all exterior surfaces are covered – repaint if necessary.

3. Gutters – remove all debris (leaves, sticks etc) from gutters and downpipes.

4. Roof – probably the most important on this list – check for any leaks around the more common culprit areas, such as chimneys, skylights and vents.

5. Clothes dryer – if wall mounted, bring it down and clean out the vents properly, vacuum the back free from dust and lint – this will help with your power consumption over the cold months.

6. Range hood – again, a good time to ‘splash’ out and clean the grate thoroughly.

7. Smoke Detectors – if you haven’t done so with Daylight savings ending, NOW is the time to change the batteries and check they are fully operational.

8. Flues & Chimneys – before you find the need to have a fire to warm the heart, have your chimney cleaned by a professional – chimney fires are one of the major causes of house fires over the winter months.

9. Insulation – is your ceiling space insulated? Check that the covering is thick enough. Ensure there is space around any down-lights.

And lastly - Tip #10 – overlooked by many but top of my list – plenty of marshmellows and cocoa stocked up in the cupboard.

Keep safe and warm during winter!
