How To Give Your House a Face Lift
Our homes, in a way, are like us - they need facelifts to stop them looking run down and tired. In general it’s a lot easier (less painful compared to us) and doesn’t need to cost a fortune to improve the street appeal and in turn can increase the value of your property.
Nice house, right? Lots of street appeal. But it wasn’t always this way. If you’d seen it before it was renovated, you’d think it was only fit for bulldozing. Isn’t it amazing what you can do with a bit of imagination?
Here’s the “Before” shot. Blech! We’re not big on painting brick, but in this case there weren’t a lot of options – and what wonders it’s done! A lick of white paint on the walls and khaki on the shutters, a restored roof, a new porch, some landscaping and a good tidy up were all it took to transform this home and probably double its value.
This time we’re going to do it the other way round. Here’s what this house looked like before it was renovated. What would you do if this was your place? Stuck for ideas? Then take a look at this…
A deck cleverly built around the tree, new windows across the front and some modern paint colours have transformed this tragedy into a story with a happy ending. Did it make a difference? You bet. Did it cost a fortune? No way.
Here’s another tired-looking house. Boxy, boring and oh so dated. What to do? What to do?
This could almost be a different house. But all that’s been changed is the front room which has been turned into a covered deck with French doors from the living room, the double garages which now have doors painted in a contrasting colour, and a few minor style updates.
How do add street appeal to a house like this? Easy…
Step 1: A new roof, with eaves on the front gable to add depth.
Step 2: New frames around the windows to add more depth.
Step 3: New paint with a contrast between the white trim and darker weatherboards, adding still more depth.
