Do we need Brad Pitt’s
‘Make It Right’ housing project in Christchurch?
Following the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, actor Brad Pitt and a partner, real-estate developer and philanthropist Steve Bing, stepped in to build new homes for Katrina victims with their ‘Make It Right’ project.
Their vision? To be a catalyst for change in the building industry by creating safe, sustainable and affordable homes that would be able to meet the changing needs of working families into the future.
We love the vision - mainly because many of the same principles apply to the Christchurch rebuild. We know that safety, sustainability and versatility are part of the Christchurch rebuild programme – but wonder whether anyone has thought to consult Brad about what he has learned about ‘Make It Right’. If not, we would like to volunteer to do it!
Here’s how the ‘Make It Right’ team put together a new home in 4 stages:
Stage 1:
Put down tall concrete columns designed to withstand the next disaster.
Stage 2:
Crane in the prefabricated living modules.
Stage 3:
Complete the exterior.
Stage 4:
Complete the interior and move the grateful family in.
