The Best of 2013

Fix It Renovations ezine February 2014

Photo: Drawing Chair by Jinil Park

Would you have this chair in your home? Not unless you like sitting on No. 8 fencing wire. That’s the problem with interior design shows – they tend to feature innovations which are just plain out-there and impractical. So we set out to find some award-winner from last year’s leading shows which were not only inspired and inspiring, but might just work in your home.

Best Chair

We liked this chair better.  OK, the push-pin-inspired sofa may only be slightly more practical than the wire chair, but it would certainly be the centre of a lot of conversation at your next party.

Best Bathroom

It takes guts to build a home that actually incorporates the base of a real rock cliff into the design, but Australian Bathroom Designer of the Year 2013, Darren Genner, also designed this bathroom around another stunning aspect of the natural environment, the views to a nearby beach.

Best Bathroom Runner Up

The bathrooms of today are multifunctional spaces where basic needs meet the yearning for a sense of security and luxury, says Homechunk magazine. But the “Pop up my Bathroom” project from ISH 2013 aims to add a new element – creativity. Stretching the possibilities of modern bathroom design, the Bathroom Bubble is a permeable living cocoon which can be “popped up” anywhere from a rooftop to a yard, creating a place to relax, think or be creative.

Best Carpet

We accept that this MC Escher-inspired carpet by Sebastian Wrong wouldn’t be right for a smaller space, but we’ve always felt that most carpet is boring and unadventurous – not something you can say about this, seen at last year’s Imm Cologne Fair.

Best Kitchen

US kitchens don’t normally do it to us – they’re often too fussy and old-fashioned. But something about this kitchen in Colorado appealed to us. The clean lines? The contrast between the dark woodgrain and white walls? The curve amongst the right angles?

Best House

We liked last year’s New Zealand House of the Year award-winners but we liked this US 2013 Housing Awards recipient even more because of the way it blended into its natural environment while still making a distinctive architectural statement. Practically invisible from the road above, the grassed roofs provide natural insulation in the mountains of Colorado.

We also liked the way even the retaining wall and outdoor fireplace blended into the surrounding environment.

Best Storage

Looking like a pile of packing cases, these interlocking modular units from QUBOO make it easy to design your library, bench or shelving to suit your needs. This was one of 15 products which received an Interior Innovation Award at the Imm Cologne Fair, which celebrates the best in show from over 1,100 international brands.

We also liked the nifty collapsible REBAR Shelf System by Jonas Schroeder.

Best Apartment

As you know, we’re into super-efficient small spaces, and we think this studio apartment from the TV show Girls may be the coolest tiny space we've ever seen.

Best Office

The latest management thinking is that you can vastly increase your productivity and output by taking time out and even short naps during your working day – or at least, that’s what we tell everybody. The innovative Sidewise office layout by Figure3 for Teknion allows for both personal one-to-one meetings and those quiet moments to yourself.

Best workshop wall

Home workshops range between the over-organised and over-structured to absolute chaos. This tool wall by Danish furniture and lighting designer Louise Campbell, who conceived Das Haus, the central exhibit at the 2013 IMM Cologne Fair, proves that even a tool wall can be a work of art.
