Bathroom design guide: Goodbye to telephone booth-sized showers, hello freedom and space!

Telephone booth? What's a telephone booth? Its demise as an architectural feature of our urban landscape has come with the rise of the mobile phone and the freedom to call anybody from anywhere (except your car).

Now telephone booth-sized shower enclosures are going the same way. The reason? The greater space, style, accessibility and freedom of wet-area showers.

Wet Area Shower
As you can see from the photograph on the left, wet-area showers form an integral part of the modern bathroom. They're beautiful and seamless, quite unlike the typical shower enclosure which can be a blot on the otherwise stylish design landscape of the traditional bathroom.

Another beauty of wet area showers is that they work for everyone, regardless of age, size, mobility and needs. There's no step up, the shower floor is a continuation of the rest of the bathroom floor. There's a lot more space when you opt to discard the limitations of the traditional enclosure and door. Some wet-area showers are completely open, with no glass screen or wall at all. Ah, the freedom!

Below you'll see a couple of other ideas for wet-area showers. When it comes to what you can do, you're really only limited by your imagination and sometimes by the overall size and layout of your bathroom.

However, over the next few weeks, we'll present some ideas on how you can overcome many space limitations, as well as more ideas on design, styles and features which you may want to consider.
